Veterans Treatment Courts
Veterans Treatment Courts promote sobriety, recovery, and stability through a coordinated response that involves cooperation and collaboration with community and state-wide partners.
Michigan Veterans Treatment Courts
Veterans Treatment Courts (VTCs) are specialized, hybrid court programs combining drug and mental health court principles to treat, rather than incarcerate, justice-involved veterans. They provide intensive, supervised treatment for PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and substance abuse, pairing veterans with mentors and connecting them to VA benefits.
- Purpose: Address the underlying causes of criminal behavior (often service-related) by offering rehabilitation instead of prison, aiming to reduce recidivism.
- Eligibility: Generally for veterans (and sometimes active-duty personnel) diagnosed with a mental illness or substance use disorder, often requiring a nexus between their service and the offense.
- Program Structure: Typically a four-phase program lasting 12 to 18 months, featuring regular, strict court appearances before a judge.
